🌌 Stargazing & Dark Sky Viewing

Seneca County is a prime destination for stargazers thanks to its minimal light pollution. The region’s dark skies provide perfect conditions for spotting meteor showers, the Milky Way, and bright planets.

Notable stargazing spots include:

  • Finger Lakes National Forest – According to go-astronomy, the Finger Lakes National Forest is recognized as a dark sky location in the state of New York for stargazing and astronomy activities. Because it is a U.S. national forest, dispersed camping is permitted away from car and RV campsites, which allows for even darker skies.

  • Sampson State Park – In the south end of the county away from city lights, Sampson State Park provides wide open spaces ideal for evening skywatching. While camping ends mid-fall, the park is open for walks and visits from dawn until dusk, offering the chance to catch a glimpse of a beautiful sunset and the stars just beginning to peek out at you.

  • Seneca Lake State Park – While the inside of the State Park closes at dusk, the entrance along the lake in Geneva, NY offers gorgeous views of the night sky from the comfort of Adirondack chairs on the shore and desk overlooking the water. Enjoy the stars and the faint bustle and glow of small city nightlife.
