The Real Women: Veterans of Vietnam author presentation

Inspired by Kristin Hannah’s best-selling novel The Women, award-winning journalist Nancy E. Lynch will present "The REAL Women, Veterans of Vietnam" on Wednesday, October 14, at 6:00 PM at the Seneca Falls Library (47 Cayuga St., Seneca Falls, NY). During the presentation, Lynch will read wartime letters written by nurses and American Red Cross "Donut Dollies" serving on the front lines. These letters were originally published between 1968 and 1972 in Lynch's popular News Journal column, Nancy’s Vietnam Mailbag, in Wilmington, DE. In 2008, fulfilling a promise made in her final column, Lynch published these collected stories in her acclaimed book Vietnam Mailbag: Voices From the War:1968-1972. While public perception often overlooks female service, roughly 10,000 military women served in Vietnam in communications, intelligence, administration, and healthcare roles. Hundreds more civilian women volunteered with organizations like the USO, Red Cross, and local news outlets. While "women can be heroes" was a central revelation for Kristin Hannah’s fictional heroine, it remains an established reality for the women who served—and died—in Vietnam. Lynch, an author of seven non-fiction books, lives in Bethel, DE but has deep roots in the Finger Lakes. She is dedicated to honoring Vietnam veterans and raise awareness of their service and sacrifices. Admission is free and open to the public.
