"For Della (a.k.a. Delfina Pereira), Seneca Falls, New York, in 1916 offers days of drudgery in the knitting mill and nights confined to a shabby apartment with Mama, the town's most outspoken suffragist. Della wants only to find love and escape Mama's unpopular opinions and the foreign ways that make her immigrant family so different" (from the back cover of "Women of Glass and Steel" by Mary Lash).
In this dynamic presentation, SFHS Executive Director Jonathan Monfiletto shares the history of the Seneca Knitting Mill and the community and people that it impacted throughout its more than 150 years of operation and how the knitting mill continues to impact the community and people of Seneca Falls. In the same vein, author Mary Lash shares the story behind the real locations in her historical novel "Women of Glass and Steel" and the characters - some real - in her book and how the community of Seneca Falls, past and present, has influenced her life and writing.
This program takes place on Saturday, August 22 at 2 p.m. in the dining room of the Becker Mansion, located at 55 Cayuga St. in Seneca Falls. Admission costs $8 for SFHS members and $10 for nonmembers, and registration in advance is welcome but not required.
