Senior U.S. Army and Department of Defense officials regularly inspected the depot during the Cold War because it reportedly housed one of the nation’s largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons.
The protected environment inside the former Seneca Army Depot helped the rare white deer population survive and grow over many decades because the fenced military installation limited predators and hunting pressure.
Most of the deer are considered leucistic, meaning they have a genetic condition that causes reduced pigmentation in their hair and skin, resulting in a white coat while still retaining normal-colored eyes, noses, and hooves.
